Claude Adds Personal Finance Beta in the US: Read-Only Bank Accounts via Plaid
Anthropic is launching Personal Finance in Claude, rolling out in beta this week in the US for Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers. Users connect accounts via Plaid on a read-only basis; Claude cannot move or invest money.

Anthropic is launching Personal Finance in Claude: users can link their bank accounts and cards, then ask in plain language where their money went, what is left before payday, or whether a specific expense has surged. Access is read-only. The feature rolls out in beta this week in the United States for Pro, Max, and Ultra plans.
What Claude Sees, and What It Doesn’t Do
Once an account is connected, Claude can aggregate balances and transactions, categorize spending, flag unusual fees or recurring subscriptions, and generate a table or calendar of upcoming payments. Anthropic illustrates the “where did my money go this month?” scenario using demo figures: $4,309.37 in total expenses in the example, with over half going to rent and utilities and $1,024.51 to food and drink, leaving $1,393.22 before payday after four scheduled withdrawals. These are examples from Anthropic’s post, not externally measured figures.
What Personal Finance does not do: move money, manage portfolios, invest funds, or pitch proprietary credit cards, loans, or savings accounts. Anthropic also emphasizes the absence of ads and sponsored recommendations.
Plaid Connection and Privacy
Banks are not directly opened up to Claude. Users log in themselves through Plaid, the banking app connector; Claude never asks for or sees bank passwords. For selected accounts, Claude sees the bank name, account name, type, last four digits, balances, credit limits, and up to two years of transaction history.
A key privacy highlight: interactions inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train Anthropic’s models. Outside this dedicated hub, standard Claude privacy settings apply. Users can disconnect an account at any time.
Anthropic also warns that Claude can make mistakes: users should ask which transactions make up a total and verify critical figures with their bank. The tool is not designed to offer investment advice.
Beta Limitations
The rollout remains a beta limited to the US and paid Pro, Max, and Ultra tiers. Anthropic does not specify the exact day all eligible subscribers will gain access during the announced rollout week. In the “What’s next” section, the company mentions exploring integrations with licensed professionals and regulated firms for more consequential financial decisions—an ambition, not a finished product.
Our take
Personal Finance moves Claude onto ground already tested by other digital assistants (account aggregation, natural-language querying), backed by two clearly advertised guardrails: read-only access and no in-house financial products. Relying on Plaid and pledging not to train models on chats within the hub directly tackles the most obvious objection—handing bank records over to an LLM. That said, the tool can still hallucinate or miscalculate, as Anthropic itself concedes. In practice, its real utility lies in multi-account synthesis rather than wealth management advice. And as long as the feature remains a US-only beta on paid plans, Europe and non-Plaid accounts remain out of scope.
